What is a W-8BEN form?

W-8 forms are tax documents issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for foreign individuals or entities to confirm their tax status when receiving income from US sources. These forms are also known as the Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner for United States Tax Withholding and Reporting (Individuals).
The W-8BEN specifically declares that you are not a US tax resident. By completing this form, you can reduce the standard 30% tax rate on income (eg, dividends) earned from US stocks.

Important note:
The extent to which your tax rate is reduced depends on the tax treaty between the US and your country of residence.

Do I need to fill out the form?
Yes, if you're a non-US trader, you’ll need to complete the W-8BEN form. It will be prompted automatically when you open a US stocks trade.

How do I complete the form?
You can fill out the form directly through your Capital.com account.
